PRODUCTION DESIGN-
Production Design sets the mood of every story, and upon reading a script, I prefer to 'live' with it a while so I fully understand the point of view and vision of the Writer and Director. The literal concepts and messages within the story drive the overall design, and the design in turn reinforces the story.
HOW I WORK-
When I began illustrating for the entertainment industry, I did so using sketches, colored pencils, markers, acrylic paint and mixed media. Recently I have made the leap to digital illustration, not just for speed, but to easily facilitate revisions and variations. Still, I have had some requests for work in the traditional manner, so I always keep some paint and illustration board around my studio.
I am currently illustrating with Photoshop on a 21" Cintiq drawing tablet. Typically, a refined piece of conceptual art takes one full day to produce (10 or 12+ hrs.), however there are many variables (including research) that can affect the duration of the process. After the research is complete I usually create a rough sketch for approval before the artwork is started. Designing multiple key elements within an illustration, level of finish, using existing backgrounds, etc., will dictate the delivery time. I can produce artwork at any level of finish, rough, impressionistic, realistic, etc. depending on the time and budget of the project.
